Surfrider “Solar Powered all Watercraft” Beach Cleanup

The Surfrider Foundation Oahu Chapter will host a cleanup at the last park on Sand Island., on Sun., 8/30/09, from 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm. Surfrider is partnering with Everpaddle, to remove trash not only from the park area, but also from the water. Everpaddle will bring demo stand-up paddle boards for participants to use while removing debris both on and off shore, and conduct water testing in this industrial area. Volunteers are invited to recycle old plastic bags, bring reusable water bottles, and are welcome to bring a “watercraft” of their choice to help clean difficult to reach areas along the island. Meanwhile, Sunetrics will provide lunch and solar-powered live music.

First Annual “Pupukea-Waimea Science Talk Story”

Dr. Carl Meyer (U.H. - Hawai`i Inst. Marine Biology)

 

Learn about the science behind the Pupukea-Waimea Marine Life Conservation District, how to protect the marine ecosystems of the North Shore, and how to achieve our community vision of “more fish and healthy reefs.”

Public Workshop on Day-Use Mooring Buoys (Hawaii Island)

The Department of Land and Natural Resources and Malama Kai Foundation are seeking public input for developing the state’s first 10-year Day-Use Mooring Buoy Plan for the main Hawaiian Islands. Workshops to gain public input are being conducted on Hawai’i, Kaua’i, Maui and O’ahu. The Hawai’i Island workshop is scheduled for August 13 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Kealakehe High School in the cafeteria.

Workshop participants will also be invited to provide suggestions for funding and managing the statewide program, rule changes, and ways to maintain the moorings to protect coral reefs and meet the needs of ocean users.

DLNR Fish Meeting (Kaua’i)

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) invites the public to participate in informational meetings to discuss possible regulations for certain marine fish species.

The public discussion will center on using minimum size rules to protect harvested resource fish that may be at risk of being over harvested, and will focus on at least three main fish families that the DLNR feels may be in need of updated regulations. They are: Parrotfish (uhu), Goatfish (weke), and Jacks (ulua/papio). The Division of Aquatic Resources has not yet drafted rule changes.
