DLNR Fish Meeting (Kaua’i)

January 1, 1970 12:00 amtoJune 15, 2011 8:30 pm

At the Kaua’i Community College, Electronics Technology building, room 114.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) invites the public to participate in informational meetings to discuss possible regulations for certain marine fish species.

The public discussion will center on using minimum size rules to protect harvested resource fish that may be at risk of being over harvested, and will focus on at least three main fish families that the DLNR feels may be in need of updated regulations. They are: Parrotfish (uhu), Goatfish (weke), and Jacks (ulua/papio). The Division of Aquatic Resources has not yet drafted rule changes.

Conservation Action Workshop by the Coral Reef Alliance (Maui)

December 18, 2008
5:30 pmto8:30 pm

At the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary education center (726 South Kihei Rd) This will be an opportunity for organizations, businesses, and individuals to receive funding (in the form of “microgrants” typically in the range of $500-$5,000) for collaborative community-based projects that seek to reduce threats to Maui’s reefs, particularly the Marine Life Conservation Districts of Molokini and Honolua Bay. CORAL is also inviting community input via an online survey in order to help focus efforts and target potential projects that will make the greatest difference, and seeks new ideas and suggestions for projects that will have the most impact at these sites by supporting resource management goals and objectives. The workshop is targeted towards community members and organizations, dive/tour operation managers, guides, boat captains, instructors, naturalists, teachers and students, government representatives, and anyone with an interest in marine tourism and conservation. The Conservation in Action workshop will take participants through the steps necessary to develop a project and prepare a simple proposal.

Registration is required for this workshop; please contact CORAL’s Hawaii Field Manager Liz Foote at Lfoote@coral.org, or call (808) 669-9062 to do so.

Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary Volunteer Training

This year the Sanctuary volunteer program will continue providing opportunities for volunteers in the Education Center, with School Groups, on Whale Watching Excursions, at Information Stations in Kaanapali, Maui Ocean Center and Wailea, with the Turtle Stranding team, Citizen Scientist program and at special events.

This year all Sanctuary volunteers and staff are required to attend a 3-day 2008 Sanctuary Volunteer Training. This will be a great opportunity to learn and/or be updated on new and existing programs, learn how to handle ‘hot topics’, become familiar with protocols, get hands on training with disentanglement and research programs and ultimately improve your understanding of the Sanctuary Program. The 3-day training is intended to give you the basic tools to successfully represent the Sanctuary both on and off site.

December Dates:
(TU) Dec, 9th: 6pm - 8:30pm
(TH) Dec, 11th: 6pm - 8:30pm
(SAT) Dec, 13th: 9am - 2pm

Please contact Emily Carlson, Volunteer Programs & Outreach Coordinator to register for the 2008 Sanctuary Volunteer Training and to RSVP at Tel: 808-879-2818 x102

Waianae Kai burn site tree planting trip

December 6, 2008
8:00 amto3:00 pm

There will be a volunteer work trip to the Wai`anae Kai burn site on December 6th (Saturday), 8 am - 3 pm to outplant about 130 koa seedlings. This is an effort to restore the watershed with native species and prevent erosion.

This is considered a strenuous trip — it is about a 2 hour hike up to the site on steep terrain — sturdy shoes with good traction is recommended.

If you are interested in helping, please let Amy Tsuneyoshi know by noon on Dec 5th and she will provide you with more information about the meeting place.
